What If You Already Know What You Need to Do?
There’s an uncomfortable question hiding behind a lot of personal development:
If you already know what you need to do, why aren’t you doing it?
That’s where this episode started for me.
I’ve got the experience. I’ve got the knowledge. I’ve got the tools. I’ve spent years working with NLP, hypnosis, personal development and behaviour change.
And yet there are still things I don’t do.
So what’s going on?
I eventually found a question that made me stop and think:
What would someone who has already achieved the thing I’m trying to achieve do?
That changes everything.
I’m not looking for someone who is “better” than me. I’m looking for someone who has already solved the particular problem I’m trying to solve.
What do they notice?
What do they believe is possible?
What do they do first?
What do they avoid?
How do they talk to themselves?
And perhaps most importantly:
What do they consider obvious that I currently consider difficult?
That’s modelling.
And modelling is something I’ve been fascinated by through NLP for years. We don’t have to copy somebody else’s personality or become somebody else. We can discover the patterns that work and then mould them into our own way of doing things.
Because there is only one you.
The point isn’t to become the successful person you’re imagining.
The point is to discover what you can learn from them.
Then comes the bit that matters.
What would I do next if I knew what they knew?
Not next week.
Not when everything is perfect.
Not someday.
Next.
Perhaps that’s the real secret to getting unstuck.
You don’t always need the whole route mapped out. You need enough light to see the next step.
And once you take that step, the next bit of the path often becomes visible.
That’s how I’m finding my way at the moment.
And perhaps it’s how you can find yours too.
